Nolympics: unrealised Dutch Olympic Architecture, 23/6 - 6/7

Dutch Showcase at the London Festival of Architecture 2012.

A timely nod to London’s Olympic year, ‘Nolympics’ is pretty self-explanatory: unrealised Dutch Olympic architecture.

This exhibition project, the Dutch contribution to the International Showcase of the London Festival of Architecture 2012, profiles a selection of high-quality projects connected to past bids to become an Olympic, versions of Olympic designs that were never realised in their original form and, more excitingly, Olympic architecture that may still happen. In some cases, this is certainly a possibility.
You are invited to peruse projects such as MVRDV’s design for the Olympic Weaving Village that might have come to fruition had New York won the bid for the 2012 Olympics. London, however, is well represented. There’s KCAP’s Legacy Masterplan that lays out a vision of what might happen with London’s Olympic site once all the records have been broken and the medals dispensed. Or, there’s BDP’s vibrant and quirky proposal for the overlay of the London Olympics, beautifully captured using the traditional craft of illustration.
Deploying creative use of an interesting architectural space, the public are invited to live the Olympic dream as envisaged by the likes of BDP, KCAP and MVRDV, amongst others. As is self-evident, some of those exhibiting already have realised Olympic projects in their portfolio.
Truly being in the running for an Olympic project takes world class talent and skill. In ‘Nolympics’, the unrealised Olympic visions of the participating studions are counterbalanced by their international track records of individually being responsible for numerous lauded public building projects, urban planning and iconic object buildings around the globe.
Nolympics is open to the public:
23 June until 6 July, Mon – Fri, 10:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 until 17:00.
