The Netherlands in top 5 Press Freedom Index 2012

The Netherlands was ranked at the top end of this years Press Freedom Index, an index compiled by Reporters without Borders. The two countries at the top - Finland and Norway - repeated last year's performance. They were joined by Estonia and the Netherlands on a joint 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.
The Press Freedom Index is an annual ranking of countries compiled and published by Reporters Without Borders based upon the organisation's assessment of their press freedom records. It reflects the degree of freedom journalists and news organisations enjoy in each country, and the efforts made by the state to respect and ensure respect for this freedom. Reporters Without Borders comments that these countries, including the Netherlands, "respect basic freedoms" and serve "as a reminder that media independence can only be maintained in strong democracies and that democracy needs media freedom."
Reporters Without Borders promotes and defends the freedom to be informed and to inform others throughout the world.
